Unequal Resource Allocation for Public Education

Matt Ashby will lead us in a discussion on funding for public education in Massachusetts, and offer some ideas about why and how it could be improved. In large part those ideas stem from a recent report entitled "A Bold Agenda for School Integration," by the nonprofit Century Foundation

In this vein, note that while one of Nikole Hannah-Jones' articles in the New York Times is about New York City public schools rather than those in Massachusetts, she has written thoroughly on this topic for years. Please watch this Fireside Chat at Google with Nikole Hannah-Jones, to learn about her perspective as preparation for the session on Monday. This video is about one hour long.

The slides for this presentation are attached below.

Matt Ashby joined the CfA in 1995 to support the SWAS mission, and he later joined  the Spitzer/IRAC team.  His scientific focus is on infrared surveys.  Currently he's a Co-I on SPHEREx, NASA's newest MIDEX, which will carry out an infrared spectroscopic survey of the entire sky.  Matt is also currently co-Director of SAO's REU summer research program.  He has one son in the Acton public schools and another son hoping to start his sophomore year of college in person! this fall.
